Voted the Best French Brasserie, by readers of Time Out New York, Brasserie Les Halles opened Les Halles Downtown in the financial district at 15 John Street, on Tuesday, December 18, 2001. According to owner Philippe Lajaunie, Les Halles Downtown was among the first new restaurants to open after September 11. Philippe Lajaunie is committed to the neighborhood, “New York is the most dynamic place in the world,” he says. “Lower Manhattan will come back and we want to be a part of it. There are fewer restaurants downtown and our community is diverse. There are the civil servants from City Hall, the business community from Wall Street, residents who need an informal restaurant in the neighborhood, and there are plenty of tourists. We are providing everything from the great steaks and potatoes that made us famous, to the best seafood from the small markets in Chinatown, French specialties that you may not see anywhere else, and fantastic hamburgers.” As further proof of his commitment, Lajaunie moved the Les Halles Liberty Festival, with its world famous Bastille Waiter’s Race, from its comfortable home on the Upper East Side to Lower Manhattan.

Lajaunie describes the latest Les Halles brasserie as a downtown steakhouse that also serves classic French brasserie dishes like Onion Soup, Grilled Sea Food, Confit de Canard, and Choucroute Garnie, (familiar to fans of Brasserie Les Halles on Park Avenue). There are also less familiar French dishes, such as Tartiflette, a combination of thinly sliced potatoes layered with bacon and baked with Reblochon cheese. Les Halles Downtown also takes advantage of its proximity to the Tribeca Farmers’ Market for the best local produce, and the family-run fish markets of Chinatown for the freshest seafood. Les Halles Downtown also serves more casual offerings such as a “French dip” sandwich and a Hamburger, both served with Les Halles’ famous French fries for those who just want to drop in for a quick bite to eat.
